"On the Go with Joe," a lighthearted news segment series produced by FOX affiliate KPTV, recently highlighted Sloan dual-flush Flushometers, which are installed at Portland International Airport in Portland, Ore. Reporter Joe Vithayathil, who regularly mixes tongue-in-cheek observations with serious reporting during his "On the Go" segment, ventured into the men’s restrooms at the airport to test the dual-flush Flushometers for himself.
Vithayathil demonstrated the manual UPPERCUT® Flushometer’s dual-flush options by pouring Mountain Dew into a toilet to simulate the need for a reduced flush, and then throwing in half a Twinkie for a full flush. He also stood in front of an electronic Sloan ECOS™ dual-flush Flushometer just long enough to trip the low-flush mode.
The airport has installed 330 UPPERCUT Flushometers in its public restrooms; the Sloan ECOS Flushometers are in the restrooms of the Port of Portland offices.
"We actually get a lot of fan mail on the flush valves," said Steve Johnson, a spokesman for the Port of Portland who was interviewed for the segment. "Oregon is a very environmentally conscious place to live. People appreciate that we’re conserving water in the airport."
According to Johnson, the Sloan dual-flush Flushometers are saving the airport about 30,000 gallons of water every day—enough water to fill about 600 bathtubs.
